Graphic designers, bloggers, painters, crafters, photographers and others are making money by pursuing their passions. Thanks to websites that empower artists to market, sell and manage their artwork, art is becoming profitable business. Even more astounding is the fact that businesses are also profiting from art.

Here are three examples of traditional business practices being refreshed by the presence and power of art:

Art Transforms Life Insurance

Life insurance is a touchy subject. People don’t often get excited about policies that payout when they cease to exist. Nevertheless, life insurance is an important policy to hold. More so, it is a business that stands the test of time. However, Beagle Street, a life insurance company in the UK recognizes the need to breathe new life into this longstanding insurance practice. The artwork is not for their office walls or holiday greeting cards; the art is for their insurance policies. Each one of their client’s is given a printout of his or her policy, covered with a piece of original artwork. Not only does the colorful cover remind people to “Enjoy Life,” it also helps them find their life insurance policies – among a drab sea of white papers and black text – when the time is right.

Art Transforms Business Cards

What do Cisco, Intel, and Hubspot have in common? Aside from being some of the most recognizable names in business they share similar wall art. Each company has commissioned artwork from gapingvoid. Founded by a cartoonist, gapingvoid exists to “affect change in business and business culture.” And gapingvoid offers more than interior décor; it also transforms traditional, run-of-the-mill business cards.

Art Transforms Board Rooms

Attending a board meeting can be downright boring. But not for ABGC Architecture and Design. The design firm commissioned 22,742 LEGO bricks to create the board room table that sits in the office of a Dublin ad agency.

Art is breathing new life into traditional business practices. If conference room tables can be made of LEGOs, cartoons can be drawn on business cards and a life insurance policy can be as beautiful as life itself, then it seems art can transform any business.

Promote Your Art Through an Open Studio

A great way to drum up interest in your art is to hold an open studio. Instead of waiting for your art to get accepted into a gallery, why not turn your work space into a temporary showing space? Remember that most art lovers enjoy spending time in artists’ studios because it allows them an inside peek into the process behind the art.

Here are several tips for hosting a successful open studio:

Send invitations to local gallery owners, local art critics, and anyone you think may be a patron of your art. Don’t forget to invite your friends and family also, because they will help stir up conversation about your art amongst the other attendees, and their enthusiasm will be infectious.
Make sure your studio is neat and presentable, but you don’t need to go overboard. People will expect paint splatters in an artist’s studio! You should leave some of your art materials (paints, brushes, palettes, etc) in their natural positions, so that your tidied studio still retains the essence of your creative energy – but make sure all toxic chemicals are safely stored away.
Arrange your artwork in an organized display around your art space. Add title cards underneath them with your name, the title of the work, and the price, if it is for sale. It is also a good idea to display one or more works-in-progress, because many people will be interested in seeing the evolution of an artist’s work.
Have plenty of business cards available. A guestbook is also a good idea for adding to your mailing list.
Consider selling prints of your art for people on a budget. You could also sell other low-cost items with your art on them, such as cards, magnets, bookmarks, etc.
If your art space is big enough for people to linger, offer a plate of hors d’oeuvre. If your budget allows, offer your guests wine or other drinks.
To set the ambience, select appropriate music to accompany your open studio – but play the music softly. It’s important that your guests are able to hear you and vice versa.
Once the doors are open, socialize. Don’t be afraid to start conversations with people you don’t know. You’ll be asked a lot of questions by people who want to know more about you and your art, so be mentally prepared. Your open studio is an opportunity for networking, so make the most of it.

Leonardo da Vinci was an amazingly talented and well rounded individual who lived in Italy during the Renaissance period (1500-1600). His talents included architecture, engineering, mathematics, music, and of course painting. Considered one of the greatest painters of all time, we are excited to bring many of his famous works into the creative world of SegPlayPC (No doubt Leonardo himself would have enjoyed this form of painting!). A dinosaur on wheels… a Cadillac covered in Legos… a tie-dyed school bus… if you see all of these rolling towards you, it doesn’t mean you’re stuck in a surrealistic dream – it probably means you’re watching an Art Car Parade!

An art car is a vehicle that has been transformed through the magic of paint or found objects, and a healthy dose of creativity, into a mobile objet d’art. First originating during the hippie movement of the 60s, the art car phenomenon is still alive and well today. Annual Art Car Parades take place in cities such as Houston, Minneapolis and San Francisco, and also feature prominently in festivals such as Burning Man. Houston’s annual Art Car Parade draws nearly a quarter of a million attendees, testimony to the popularity of these wacky and wonderful automobiles.

“Mutant vehicles” are the more radically-transformed cousins of art cars (as shown above). Mutant vehicles refer to cars that barely resemble our common conception of what a car should look like, because they have been transformed into whimsical mobile creations, like giant red wagons, hot dogs, monsters and even cathedrals.

Artist and non-artists alike have taken to decorating their cars. Those who don’t consider themselves “traditional” artists embellish their cars by covering them entirely with bumper stickers, pennies, Astroturf, Legos, and Barbie Dolls. Fine artists can show off their painting skills by creating detailed and elaborate murals on their cars, usually using enamel or airbrush.

For artists, an art car is an excellent way to show off your art because it becomes a mobile gallery, turning heads on the highway and in parking lots. If you have an art car or decide to transform your car into one, make the most out of the free publicity by adding a bumper sticker with your website address, or by painting your name and website URL somewhere prominent.
